Raymond helps Canucks beat Capitals 3-2
Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo had lots of help shutting down Alexander Ovechkin at one end, and Canucks forward Mason Raymond did his best impression of the Capitals' superstar at the other.
Raymond tied the game with a nifty move late in the second period, and then patiently lifted in the winner on a power play with 6:04 left, lifting the Canucks to a 3-2 victory over Washington on Friday night.
"We stayed with it and got some big goals there by Raymond," said Luongo, who struggled on first-period goals by Alexander Semin and Brooks Laich, but stopped Semin on a penalty shot with 5:45 left among his 25 saves.chocolate classic short uggs
Ryan Kesler had a goal and an assist playing with Raymond. But more impressive was the job their line did playing against Ovechkin, who received all the hype coming into Vancouver for just the second time in a five-year career that has produced two league MVP awards.
With lots of help from the defense pair of Sami Salo and Willie Mitchell, the Canucks held the Russian star without a shot through two periods, and without a point for only the sixth time all season.
"We were trying to capitalize off their mistakes," Raymond said. "We knew if we kept shutting their top lines down we would be heading back the other way."
That was exactly how Raymond tied the game with 2:21 left in the second period, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush after Luongo turned away Mike Green from point blank in the slot.
Raymond put the Canucks ahead while Capitals defenseman Tom Poti was serving a double-minor ! a cross check, and unsportsmanlike conduct call for slamming the door to the penalty box.

"Confidence is a funny thing," said Kesler, who has four goals in his last six games after going 14 without scoring. "When you have it you feel good and it s effortless out there. Mase is playing good, were using our speed to our advantage and Mase is capitalizing on his scoring chances."

Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau wasn't happy with the call that led to the winning goal, but was even less impressed with his own power play, which came in No. 1 in the NHL but was blanked on four chances by Vancouver's 20th-ranked penalty kill.
"Our power play was horrible," Boudreau said after the Capitals failed to register a shot on three of the four man advantages. "We didn't generate anything.
Luongo made Raymond's second goal stand up after Semin was hauled down by Kevin Bieksa on a partial breakaway and awarded a penalty shot 19 seconds later. Climate deal meets furious reception
Fury erupted Saturday at a gruelling climate summit as poor nations ripped into a deal agreed by a core group of world leaders which even its supporters admitted would not stem global warming.
US President Barack Obama said he reached an "unprecedented breakthrough" in meetings with about two dozen presidents and prime ministers gathered in Copenhagen in the finale of a long-anticipated, 12-day summit.

His remarks set off outrage among many other nations. And even some developing states signalled they would part ways and support an imperfect agreement.

The agreement set a commitment to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit), but did not spell out the important stepping stones -- global emissions targets for 2020 or 2050 -- for getting there.
Nor did it spell out a year by which emissions should peak, a demand made by rich countries that was fiercely opposed by China, or insist on tough compliance mechanisms to ensure nations honoured their promises.
Somewhat more successfully, it spelt out some details for how poor countries should be financially aided to shore up their defences against rising seas, water stress, floods and storms.
Rich countries pledged to commit 30 billion dollars in "short-track" finance for the 2010-2012 period, including 11 billion from Japan, 10.6 billion from the European Union and 3.6 billion dollars from the United States.

The US president said before leaving Copenhagen that what had been billed as one of the most important summits since World War II would be the starting gun for a much stronger effort to combat global warming.
"Today we have made a meaningful and unprecedented breakthrough here in Copenhagen," Obama told reporters.
"For the first time in history, all major economies have come together to accept their responsibility to take action to confront the threat of climate change."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who will host the next climate summit in mid-2010, admitted she viewed the result "with mixed emotions" but added that "the only alternative to the agreement would have been a failure."
The deal was hammered out in talks between Obama and the leaders of China, India, Brazil and South Africa as well as key European countries.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said talks had been close to collapse on seven occasions, but were ultimately saved by sharp deal-making in which Obama played a lead role.
China had bristled at anything called "verification" of its plan to cut the intensity of its carbon emissions, seeing it as an infringement of sovereignty and saying that rich nations bore primary responsibility for global warming.
Disagreements between the China and United States -- the world's No. 1 and 2 carbon polluters -- had been at the core of the divisions holding up a deal.
The agreement was met with dismay by campaigners, who said it was weak, non-binding and sold out the poor.

Jury awards BP workers $100 million in lawsuit
A federal jury Friday awarded more than $100 million to 10 workers who claimed they were injured in 2007 when a toxic substance was released at BP PLC's Texas City plant.
The jurors in Galveston, about 50 miles southeast of Houston, gave each contract worker $10 million in punitive damages. Nine of the workers were also awarded between $5,000 and $10,000 for pain and suffering and medical expenses, while the 10th got more than $240,000.pink ugg boots
The verdict came after 1 1/2 days of deliberations following a three-week trial.
In a brief statement, BP denied it had harmed any of the workers.
"We are shocked and outraged by today's verdict, and we will appeal," BP said. "The verdict, and punitive damages award in particular, is utterly unjustified, improper and unsupportable."
Tony Buzbee, the workers' attorney, said his clients were pleased with the jury's decision, adding he had approached BP before the trial and had offered to settle for $10,000 for each worker. BP rejected the proposal, he said.
"They tried to minimize it, attack the credibility of the workers," Buzbee said. "They simply would not admit that they had released something."
The refinery, about 30 miles southeast of Houston, was the site of a 2005 explosion that killed 15 people and injured 170 ! the worst U.S. industrial accident since 1990.

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, a group that investigated the 2005 blast, found BP fostered bad management at the plant and that cost-cutting moves by BP were factors in the explosion.
The jury's award also comes after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in October imposed a record $87 million fine against BP for failing to correct safety hazards after the 2005 blast.
The workers' lawsuit claimed that in April 2007, more than 100 contract employees at the plant were sent to hospitals after claiming they were exposed to a toxic substance released at the refinery.
The workers said their injuries included dizziness and sore throats, with one employee passing out, after inhaling the substance. Buzbee said the workers did not have any long-term damage to their lungs.
Through the trial, BP claimed no toxic substance was released at the refinery on the date in question.
Buzbee said he tested one of the worker's gas masks and it revealed they had been exposed to carbon disulfide, a toxic colorless liquid.
"Jurors were angry about the (safety) record I put forth that showed BP has a long history of leaks and releases," he said. "My point was BP has not changed, not turned the corner, and if you don't do something about this, no one will."ugg classic cardy grey
The 10 workers are part of a group of 143 that Buzbee represents in this lawsuit. Buzbee said he plans on taking the other workers' claims to trial as well.

US dad's custody fight threatening ties
A New Jersey man made an emotional plea Friday for Brazilian authorities to let him take his son home in a custody fight that is expanding into a political tussle and testing the limits of an international child abduction treaty.
David Goldman has worked through courts in the U.S. and Brazil for more than five years to regain custody of his son, Sean. The boy was taken by his mother in 2004 to her native Brazil, where she then divorced Goldman, remarried and ultimately died last year in childbirth.

After slogging through Brazil's labyrinthine legal system for years, the case gained momentum when a federal appellate court ruled Wednesday that the boy should be handed over to Goldman. But the next day, a Supreme Court justice stayed that decision pending a top court ruling on whether the boy's own wishes should be heard.
That means Sean must stay in Brazil until the issue is decided ! and with the Supreme Court going into a two-month recess Friday, the case likely won't be heard until at least Feb. 1, when the justices reconvene.
However, Goldman's Brazilian attorney Ricardo Zamariola told O Globo newspaper that urgent cases could still be heard during the recess. Calls to Zamariola were not returned.
The Brazilian Attorney General's Office was weighing Friday whether to ask the court to lift the stay, though no action had been taken by the time the agency closed.
While the boy's Brazilian family applauded the Supreme Court justice's decision, a U.S. congressman questioned the merits of hearing testimony from a child who may be susceptible to pressure from adult relatives.
"If any court anywhere accepts information provided by a 9-year-old ... in front of a camera under duress, coercion or some other kind of manipulation, kidnappers around the world will rejoice," said Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, who is in Brazil supporting Goldman. "All they have to do is coerce their kidnapped victim to say, 'I want to stay in Japan, Brazil or anywhere.'"
Meanwhile an independent attorney who specializes in the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction, which seeks to ensure that custody decisions are made by the courts in the country where the child originally lived, said it could set a bad precedent.
"If the Brazilian courts ultimately refuse to have the matter decided in New Jersey, it is an affront to international law and no child is safe to travel out of the United States," said Greg Lewen of the Miami-based law firm Fowler White Burnett.shoes ugg
The boy's wishes should be considered only "in determining the reason for the removal if there was some allegation that returning the child was unsafe, which is not alleged here," Lewen wrote in an e-mail.
After the Thursday stay was issued, New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg placed a hold on a bill renewing a trade deal that allows Brazil and other countries to export some products duty-free to the United States. Brazil received about $2.75 billion in benefits last year from the agreement, according to Smith.
The U.S. Embassy released a statement expressing disappointment that Sean still cannot be reunited with his father.
"The fact that the American Secretary of State made a statement regarding a decision made by the Brazilian Supreme Court indicates that we are on the verge of an institutional crisis between the two countries," said Sergio Tostes, attorney for Sean's stepfather.
Tostes then issued a surprise invitation, announcing that Goldman's former mother-in-law is asking the American to spend Christmas with the family. It was not immediately possible to contact Goldman to see if he would accept.
